Mayor Mackenzie re-elected for a second term as Mayor of Basildon

Vange councillor, Yetunde Adeshile, remains Deputy Mayor

The Mayor of Basildon, Cllr Luke Mackenzie (Con, Pitsea South-East), has been formally re-elected by Full Council on Thursday for a second term of office as the Mayor of Basildon Borough Council and First Citizen of the Borough. Mayor Mackenzie formally succeeded Mayor Dadds as the 7th Mayor of Basildon at the Annual Meeting in May 2022 and has undertaken the role over the past municipal year.

The Mayor, who was first elected as a councillor for Pitsea South-East in 2018 and re-elected in 2022, said: "It's been a pleasure serving as the Mayor for the past year and it has been an honour and a privilege. As Mayor, I have seen the best Borough has to offer. The organisations and charities that are a lifeline to many. The volunteers, who give many hours to make Basildon Borough a better place. The businesses, who provided much-needed employment. Much good work goes unreported and, as Mayor, I hope I have given recognition to those who make a difference."

Meanwhile, Cllr Yetunde Adeshile (Con, Vange), who was elected to the Council for Vange in 2021, was elected to continue as Deputy Mayor for another year. Councillor Adeshile said afterwards "I would like to thank colleagues for reappointing me as Deputy Mayor this year. I thoroughly enjoyed my time as Deputy Mayor last year and I'm looking forward to support our communities and supporting the Mayor in his role." She will continue to support the Mayor in his civic duties and activities during the course of the 2023/24 municipal year.

The Mayor's chosen charities this year are Feeding the Family, a local charity founded during the pandemic that both provides meals and teaches people how to cook on a budget, and the Lennox Children's Cancer Fund, which was a charity the Mayor allowed his staff to select.
