Conservatives retain administration after local elections

Basildon Borough Conservatives ended the night with 26 seats - gaining a seat in Wickford

Basildon Conservatives have retained control of Basildon Borough Council following last night's election count at the Basildon Sporting Village.

We were defending 5 of the 14 seats up for grabs across the borough and Conservative councillors were successfully re-elected in all of them. We are also pleased to welcome Yvonne Child into the Conservative Group following her successful election in Wickford Park, which she gained from the Wickford Independents.

"Despite the sometimes gloomy national picture, we fought a solid local campaign, relying on our strong record of delivery." ~ Cllr Andrew Baggott, Leader of Basildon Conservatives

Cllr Andrew Baggott, Leader of Basildon Conservatives, said: “As usual, other parties and the press want to make local elections about national issues. But, as usual, that was not what the people of Basildon were talking about on the doorstep. Despite the sometimes gloomy national picture, we fought a solid local campaign, relying on our strong record of delivery. We have been delivering on our estates through the Safe & Sound programme. We have been delivering on crime and anti-social behaviour through our Community Safety Wardens and the groundbreaking Public Space Protection Order. We have delivered support with the cost of living. We have delivered new play areas and invested in community centres, like Laindon Community Centre. We are delivering the new Pitsea pool and we are delivering millions of pounds in investment in Basildon Town Centre. We delivered a balanced budget and kept the Council's finances on an even keel. These are the things that matter to Basildon residents and this is the reason Basildon Conservatives have retained control of Basildon Council, to continue this Administration's mission to improve residents' lives."

The Conservative Group will hold their Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 9th May to elect Group officers, including the Group Leader and Deputy Leader, and to select our candidates for Mayor and Deputy Mayor for the next municipal year.
